What is the TOEFL?
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency test, created and administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service). This exam measures reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills in an academic context and is accepted by 12,000+ universities and institutions across 160+ countries, including top destinations in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and Europe.
It is not a pass/fail exam; test-takers receive a band score, and each institution sets its own minimum requirement.

TOEFL Exam Pattern 2026: What's New
As of January 21, 2026, the TOEFL exam pattern has been significantly redesigned. The test is now shorter, adaptive, and more aligned with real academic communication. Here's the new pattern. Understanding this is the first step in building an effective study plan.
New Section Order
|
Reading (30 min) Adaptive (Module 1 → Module 2)
|
Listening (29 min)Adaptive (Module 1 → Module 2)
|
Writing (23 min)3 Tasks in Total
|
Speaking (8 min)2 Tasks Only
|
💡 Key change: Writing now comes before Speaking- unlike all previous editions. There is no scheduled break in the new format. Total test time: 85–90 minutes.
How Adaptive Testing Works
For Reading and Listening, the test runs in two modules. You complete Module 1 first. Based on your performance, Module 2 automatically adjusts in difficulty. So, if you score well in Module 1 and you are routed to a harder Module 2, which allows you to reach the top band scores. However, if you score lower, you are routed to an easier Module 2 with a lower score ceiling.
