Why study in Australia?

Australia is one of the top choices for Indian students because it offers globally recognised degrees, strong post-study work options, and a large international student community. For Indian students, Australia also has specific post-study work benefits under the Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA).

After completing an eligible Australian qualification, graduates may be able to apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to live, study and work in Australia temporarily, provided they meet the visa conditions. Under ECTA, eligible Indian graduates can stay for up to 2 years after a bachelor’s degree, up to 3 years after a master’s degree, and up to 4 years after a doctoral degree. Indian students who complete a bachelor’s degree with first-class honours in STEM, including ICT, may be eligible for up to 3 years.

Other reasons Australia works well for Indian students:

  • You can work while studying — up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.
  • Australian degrees are widely recognised by employers and universities around the world.
  • Most courses are taught in English, with strong options across business, technology, healthcare, engineering, education and research.
  • Australia has a large Indian student and migrant community, which makes it easier to find cultural support, student groups and local networks.
  • There are possible skilled-migration pathways after study, but PR depends on your occupation, skills assessment, English score, points, state nomination, work experience and current visa rules.

Best Courses in Australia for Indian Students

The best course is not just the one with a high salary. It should match your interest, budget, academic background, job demand and possible skilled-migration options.

Some strong course areas for Indian students include:

  • Nursing & Healthcare — Healthcare occupations remain important in Australia, and many health-related roles receive priority in skilled visa processing.
  • Education & Teaching — Teaching is also a priority area in skilled visa processing, especially for eligible school-teaching roles.
  • Engineering — Civil, mechanical, mining, electrical and renewable-energy related courses can be useful for students interested in Australia’s infrastructure, resources and energy sectors.
  • IT, Data Science & Artificial Intelligence — These courses can lead to roles in software, analytics, cybersecurity, cloud computing and AI, but students should check whether their target job maps to an eligible skilled occupation.
  • Accounting, Business Analytics & Management — These can be good career options, but students should be careful. A general business or management degree does not automatically improve PR chances. The exact occupation mapping matters.
  • Agricultural & Environmental Sciences — These courses can be useful for students interested in sustainability, food systems, climate, water management and regional employment opportunities.

Before choosing a course, check three things: whether the course is CRICOS-registered, whether it matches your career goal, and whether the related occupation appears on Australia’s current skilled occupation lists.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Australia

The things students ask us most before they apply to Australia.

Which Australian cities are most popular and affordable for Indian students?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are among Australia’s biggest and most popular student cities, but they are also usually more expensive. Adelaide and Perth can be more affordable for many students and are classified as regional cities for migration purposes, which may bring extra benefits for eligible students.
Are scholarships available for Indian students in Australia?
Yes. Indian students can apply for university scholarships, merit-based tuition fee waivers, research scholarships such as the Research Training Program for eligible higher degree research students, and selected provider or state-based scholarships. Scholarship availability changes by university, course and intake, so students should always check the official university scholarship page before applying.
Can I bring my spouse or family while studying in Australia?
Yes. You can include your partner and dependent children in your student visa application. Family members can usually work up to 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session. In some master’s and doctoral study cases, partners may be allowed to work more than 48 hours per fortnight, depending on the visa conditions.
How much can I earn from part-time work in Australia?
From 1 July 2026, Australia’s National Minimum Wage is AUD 26.44 per hour. At the student work limit of 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, this works out to around AUD 1,270 per fortnight before tax, or roughly ₹82,000 at AUD 1 = ₹65. Many casual jobs may pay more, depending on the award, role, weekend shifts and penalty rates.
Does studying in regional Australia have any advantages?
Yes. Studying in a designated regional area can offer advantages such as lower living costs in many locations, possible extra post-study work time, and regional migration incentives for eligible students. Perth and Adelaide are regional cities for migration purposes, while Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are not counted as regional for these incentives.
Can I study in Australia without IELTS?
Yes. IELTS is not the only accepted English test. Many Australian universities also accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and other approved English tests. However, English requirements vary by university, course and visa rules, so students should check both the official course page and the latest student visa English requirements.
Which intake should I apply for?
The main intakes in Australia are February/March and July. Some universities also offer a smaller later intake, often around November, but this depends on the course and institution. It is better to apply several months in advance because admission, documents and visa processing can take time.
