The University of Wollongong (UOW) is a public research university based south of Sydney, with its main campus in bushland at the base of Mount Keira in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. It began in 1951 as a division focused on engineering and metallurgy for the local steel industry and became an independent university in 1975. UOW teaches across engineering and information sciences, business and law, science, medicine and health, and the arts, social sciences and humanities. It also runs campuses across coastal and regional New South Wales and internationally, including a campus in India.
