Why study in the United Kingdom?

The UK is one of the top choices for Indian students because it offers globally recognised degrees, one-year master's programmes, and a post-study work route that does not require employer sponsorship. Shorter courses mean lower total tuition and living costs than most other destinations.

After completing an eligible UK degree, graduates may be able to apply for the Graduate Route to live and work in the UK without a job offer, provided they meet the visa conditions. Applications submitted on or before 31 December 2026 receive 2 years. From 1 January 2027, bachelor's and master's graduates receive 18 months, while doctoral graduates continue to receive 3 years. What matters is the date you apply for the Graduate visa, not when your course ends.

Other reasons the UK works well for Indian students:

  • You can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during scheduled vacation periods, if your visa permits work.
  • Four UK universities rank in the global top 10, and seven in the top 50 (QS World University Rankings 2027).
  • Most courses are taught in English, with strong options across business, computing, engineering, healthcare, law and research.
  • There are longer-term work pathways after study, but staying on depends on securing a sponsored graduate-level role, your salary, English level and current visa rules.

Best Courses in the UK for Indian Students

Your course choice matters more in the UK because the Graduate Route gives you a fixed window to find work. Pick something that fits your budget and academic background, and that leads to roles employers can realistically sponsor.

Some strong course areas for Indian students include:

  • Computer Science, Data Science & AI: software, analytics, cybersecurity and cloud roles, most of which sit at degree level and are eligible for sponsorship.
  • Engineering: civil, mechanical, electrical and renewable-energy specialisations, supported by the UK's infrastructure and net-zero programmes.
  • Business Analytics, Finance & Accounting: useful in London's finance and consulting sector, but a general management degree does not automatically improve your sponsorship chances. The occupation you end up in does.
  • Healthcare & Nursing: the NHS is a major employer, but most clinical roles also require professional registration, such as with the NMC or HCPC.
  • Law: globally respected, though practising in England and Wales requires further steps such as the SQE.

Cost of Living & Studying in the UK

A year of studying in the UK usually costs around ₹32 to ₹58 lakh for Indian students, depending on the city, university, course and lifestyle. Medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and top MBA programmes can cost much more.

Tuition Fees

International undergraduate programmes commonly cost £11,400 to £38,000 per year, which is roughly ₹15 to ₹49 lakh. Taught postgraduate programmes usually cost £9,000 to £30,000 per year, or about ₹12 to ₹39 lakh. Fees vary widely by university, course and location, so always check the official university fee page before applying.

Living Costs

For the Student visa, you must show maintenance funds of £1,529 per month if studying in London, or £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. That works out to £13,761 (about ₹17.9 lakh) for London and £10,539 (about ₹13.7 lakh) elsewhere, on top of any unpaid tuition shown on your CAS. This is only the visa baseline, and actual costs can be higher.

Expense Outside London (per month) London (per month)
Accommodation ₹72,000 to ₹1,17,000 ₹1,17,000 to ₹1,95,000
Food & groceries ₹19,500 to ₹32,500 ₹23,500 to ₹39,000
Transport ₹5,000 to ₹10,500 ₹10,500 to ₹17,000
Utilities, phone & other costs ₹13,000 to ₹26,000 ₹15,500 to ₹32,500

You should also budget separately for the Student visa fee of £558 and the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year, both paid upfront.

Approximate costs as of July 2026, converted at £1 = ₹130. Actual expenses vary by city, rent type, lifestyle and exchange rate.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the United Kingdom

The things students ask us most before they apply to the United Kingdom.

Which UK cities are most popular and affordable for Indian students?
London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow are among the most popular student cities. London offers the strongest job market but has the highest rent and a higher visa maintenance requirement.
Are scholarships available for Indian students in the UK?
Yes. Indian students can apply for government-funded awards such as Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships, GREAT Scholarships, and a wide range of university-specific merit awards and tuition fee discounts.
Can I bring my spouse or family while studying in the UK?
Usually not. Students on taught master's and most other courses can no longer bring dependants. The main exceptions are students on research degrees such as a PhD and government-sponsored students on courses of six months or more.
Can I study in the UK without IELTS?
Yes. IELTS is not the only accepted test. Many UK universities also accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and other approved English tests, and some accept a Medium of Instruction letter for certain courses.
Which intake should I apply for?
The main UK intake is September or October, with a smaller January or February intake and a limited May intake at some universities. Apply several months in advance, because offers, deposits, CAS issue and visa processing all take time.
How long can I stay in the UK after my degree?
Under the Graduate Route, bachelor's and master's graduates who apply on or before 31 December 2026 receive two years. Those applying from 1 January 2027 receive 18 months. Doctoral graduates continue to receive three years.
