2. How to Check IELTS Test Result Online

Knowing how to check IELTS test results correctly is critical many candidates lose time by looking at the wrong portal or using incomplete login credentials.

IDP Portal (ieltsidpindia.com/result)

  1. Visit ieltsidpindia.com/result or use the link in your IDP email
  2. Log in with your username and password
  3. Go to "Declared Results"
  4. Download the provisional PDF accessible for 28 days
  5. eTRF appears within 2–3 days (computer) or day 13 (paper)

  2. Click the result link sent to your registered email
  3. Go to "Your Previous Tests and Scores"
  4. Download eTRF from the same section

IDP and British Council use separate portals. Your IDP login will not work on the British Council portal. This is why most candidates cannot check their IELTS score online.

IELTS Check Result Online: What You Need

To use the IELTS check result online system successfully, have all four of the following ready before logging in: candidate number, registered full name, passport number, and date of birth. Missing any one of these will block access entirely.

Text Candidate Number + Passport Number to 92898 92898 after 12:00 noon on the result day. Reference only, not official.

Writing and Speaking: Examiner Marked

Both are assessed by certified human examiners on four criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Writing Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1; prioritise it in preparation.

Overall Band Score Calculation

Formula: Add all four section scores ÷ 4, then round.

Worked example: Listening 6.5 + Reading 6.5 + Writing 6.0 + Speaking 7.0 = 26.0 ÷ 4 = 6.5 overall

Rounding rules:

  • Average ending in .25 → rounds up to next half band (6.25 → 6.5)
  • Average ending in .75 → rounds up to next whole band (6.75 → 7.0)

IELTS Exam Passing Score

There is no universal IELTS exam passing score. However, IELTS does not use a pass/fail system. The IELTS test passing score is set by each institution or visa body. Consider this table for approx. idea.

Purpose

Minimum Score

Foundation/pathway programs

4.5 – 5.5

Undergraduate admissions

6.0 – 6.5

Postgraduate admissions

6.5 – 7.0

Skilled migration (UK, Canada, Australia)

6.0 – 7.0 per band

UK professional registration (nursing, medicine)

7.0 – 7.5 per band

Top global universities

7.0 – 7.5 overall

What does a 7 IELTS score mean? Band 7 is "Good User" operational English with occasional errors. It meets entry requirements for most postgraduate programs, skilled worker visas, and PR applications across the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. For UK NMC (nurses) and GMC (doctors), Band 7 is required in each section, not just overall.

7. IELTS Result Validity

IELTS result validity is fixed at two years from the test date for all formats and all purposes with one exception for certain Australian visa subclasses.

Country / Purpose

Validity

Canada Express Entry

2 years

UK Student / Skilled Worker Visa

Valid at time of application

USA university admissions

2 years

New Zealand Skilled Migrant

2 years

UK ILR (some UKVI categories)

2.5 years

Australia General Skilled Migration

3 years (subclass 189, 190, 491)

Can validity be extended? No extension, grace period, or waiver exists. A full retake is required once the score expires.

Multiple scores: If you have taken IELTS more than once and both results are valid, you choose which one to submit. Institutions only see what you nominate.

8. Is IELTS Required for the UK?

Whether IELTS is required for UK applications depends entirely on the pathway, study, work, or immigration and the specific institution or visa category you are applying to.

UK Pathway

Requirement

Undergraduate / Postgraduate study

IELTS Academic 6.0 to 7.5, depending on the university

UK Student Visa

IELTS for UKVI (not standard IELTS)

UK Skilled Worker Visa

IELTS for UKVI minimum varies by role

UK Spouse / Partner Visa

IELTS for UKVI GT or IELTS Life Skills A1

UK ILR / Citizenship

IELTS Life Skills B1 (Speaking + Listening only)

NHS Nursing (NMC)

IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, 7.0 each band

Medical registration (GMC)

IELTS Academic 7.5 overall, 7.0 each band

Standard IELTS satisfies university admissions. Most UK visa categories require IELTS for UKVI, a separately approved version. Submitting a standard IELTS score for a visa application will be rejected even if the score meets the academic requirement.

10. IELTS Mock Test Result: How to Use It

An IELTS mock test result is diagnostic, not an official score. Use it to identify where your preparation is weak before the real exam.

Mock Score Pattern

Problem

Action

Listening 7.5+, Writing 5.5

Weak written production

Focus on Writing Task 2 argument structure, vocabulary

IELTS test score reading at 5.0, Listening 7.0

Skimming / scanning skills

Timed reading practice with academic texts

Speaking stuck at 5.5

Fluency and coherence

Record yourself, reduce pausing, and develop answers fully

Scores vary ±1 band

Inconsistent preparation

Full-time practice under exam conditions

Use official IDP and British Council past papers for the most accurate prediction. Third-party mock tests vary significantly in reliability.

11. Sending Results and Lost TRF

Free score reports: Send to up to 5 institutions at no cost during registration or within 2 years via your portal.

Additional copies: INR 250–300 per copy through IDP India. Confirm the current rate directly.

Lost or damaged TRF: Request an Additional Test Report Form (ATRF) from your test centre within 2 years of the test date. An ATRF carries the same official weight as the original.

Conclusion

Understanding your IELTS test results helps you track your band scores, download your TRF, and submit it to universities or visa authorities. Since IELTS scores remain valid for two years, knowing how to access and use your result ensures a smooth application process.
