The first thing to understand about your IELTS  exam test result there are two versions, and only one is official.

Never submit the provisional score to a university or visa office. Only the TRF is accepted worldwide.

The IELTS test result time differs significantly between computer-delivered and paper-based formats, a critical factor if you are working against an application deadline.

2. How to Check IELTS Test Result Online

Knowing how to check IELTS test results correctly is critical many candidates lose time by looking at the wrong portal or using incomplete login credentials.

IDP Portal (ieltsidpindia.com/result)

1. Visit ieltsidpindia.com/result or use the link in your IDP email
2. Log in with your username and password
3. Go to "Declared Results"
4. Download the provisional PDF accessible for 28 days
5. eTRF appears within 2–3 days (computer) or day 13 (paper)

To check the IELTS result by candidate number: Enter the candidate number, registered name, passport number, and date of birth. Candidate number alone is not accepted.

British Council Portal (takeielts.britishcouncil.org)

1. Log in to the Test Taker Portal
2. Click the result link sent to your registered email
3. Go to "Your Previous Tests and Scores"
4. Download eTRF from the same section

IDP and British Council use separate portals. Your IDP login will not work on the British Council portal. This is why most candidates cannot check their IELTS score online.

To use the IELTS check result online system successfully, have all four of the following ready before logging in: candidate number, registered full name, passport number, and date of birth. Missing any one of these will block access entirely.

Listening and Reading: Raw Score to Band

The IELTS test score for the listening and reading sections is 40 questions (1 mark per correct answer).

Writing and Speaking: Examiner Marked

Both are assessed by certified human examiners on four criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Writing Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1; prioritise it in preparation.

Overall Band Score Calculation

Formula: Add all four section scores ÷ 4, then round.

Worked example: Listening 6.5 + Reading 6.5 + Writing 6.0 + Speaking 7.0 = 26.0 ÷ 4 = 6.5 overall

Rounding rules:

• Average ending in .25 → rounds up to next half band (6.25 → 6.5)
• Average ending in .75 → rounds up to next whole band (6.75 → 7.0)

IELTS Exam Passing Score

There is no universal IELTS exam passing score. However, IELTS does not use a pass/fail system. The IELTS test passing score is set by each institution or visa body. Consider this table for approx. idea.

What does a 7 IELTS score mean? Band 7 is "Good User" operational English with occasional errors. It meets entry requirements for most postgraduate programs, skilled worker visas, and PR applications across the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. For UK NMC (nurses) and GMC (doctors), Band 7 is required in each section, not just overall.

7. IELTS Result Validity

IELTS result validity is fixed at two years from the test date for all formats and all purposes with one exception for certain Australian visa subclasses.

Can validity be extended? No extension, grace period, or waiver exists. A full retake is required once the score expires.

Multiple scores: If you have taken IELTS more than once and both results are valid, you choose which one to submit. Institutions only see what you nominate.

8. Is IELTS Required for the UK?

Whether IELTS is required for UK applications depends entirely on the pathway, study, work, or immigration and the specific institution or visa category you are applying to.

Standard IELTS satisfies university admissions. Most UK visa categories require IELTS for UKVI, a separately approved version. Submitting a standard IELTS score for a visa application will be rejected even if the score meets the academic requirement.

10. IELTS Mock Test Result: How to Use It

An IELTS mock test result is diagnostic, not an official score. Use it to identify where your preparation is weak before the real exam.

Use official IDP and British Council past papers for the most accurate prediction. Third-party mock tests vary significantly in reliability.

Free score reports: Send to up to 5 institutions at no cost during registration or within 2 years via your portal.

Additional copies: INR 250–300 per copy through IDP India. Confirm the current rate directly.
