Planning to move to the UK for study, work, family, settlement or immigration? Your IELTS score requirement will depend on the reason you are applying. However, there is no single score that works for every UK visa or university application.
For example, a UK student visa, Skilled Worker visa, Health and Care Worker visa, family visa and university admission may all ask for different English language levels. In most visa cases, the UK Home Office checks your English level using the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) scale, a standard way to measure language ability.
This guide explains the requirement of IELTS score for UK in simple terms, including how CEFR levels match IELTS bands, when IELTS Life Skills is needed, and what score you may need before applying.
✅ Student visa (bachelor's or above): IELTS 5.5 in each skill
✅ Student visa (below degree): IELTS 4.0 in each skill
✅ Skilled Worker, Health and Care, Scale-up, HPI (new applicants): IELTS for UKVI 5.5 in each skill
✅ Family visa (first application): IELTS Life Skills A1; Speaking and Listening only, result is Pass or Fail
✅ Family visa (extension): IELTS Life Skills A2; Speaking and Listening only, result is Pass or Fail
✅ Settlement / ILR / Citizenship: IELTS Life Skills B1; Speaking and Listening only, result is Pass or Fail
✅ UK universities: Typically 6.5 to 7.5 overall (varies by course)

IELTS score is required for the UK when you need to prove your English proficiency for a visa, university admission, settlement, citizenship, or professional registration. However, IELTS is not the only accepted English exam for studying abroad.
For UK visa and citizenship applications, a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider is also required. You will get excempt if you have a qualifying UK degree, an overseas degree taught in English with Ecctis confirmation, citizenship of a majority English-speaking country, or proof that you already met the English requirement in an earlier UK visa application.
Note: For Indian applicants, IELTS or another accepted English proof is usually needed to study in UK because India is not listed as a majority English-speaking country by GOV.UK.

IELTS Score for UK Student Visa
For a UK Student visa, the required English level depends on your course level. GOV.UK uses the CEFR scale, while IELTS gives band scores. Here is the simple comparison:
|
Course level |
CEFR level required |
IELTS score required |
|
UK bachelor’s level or above |
CEFR B2 |
IELTS 5.5 in each skill |
|
Below the UK bachelor’s level |
CEFR B1 |
IELTS 4.0 in each skill |
This score must be met in all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
However, the Student visa requirement is only the minimum English requirement for UKVI. Your university or course may ask for a higher IELTS band score, especially for competitive programmes. For example, some courses may require 6.5, 7.0 or 7.5 overall, with minimum scores in each skill.
So, before booking your IELTS test, check both the UK Student visa requirements and your university course requirements. Your actual target should be the higher score between the two.
Minimum IELTS Score for UK Work Visa in 2026
For new Skilled Worker applicants, the English requirement is now CEFR B2, which means IELTS for UKVI 5.5 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
The same B2 level generally applies to new applicants under the Health and Care Worker, Scale-up Worker, High Potential Individual and Innovator Founder routes. Some Skilled Worker applicants who already had permission before the rule change may still fall under the earlier B1 requirement when extending or updating their visa.

IELTS Score for UK Settlement and Citizenship
For UK settlement or British citizenship, applicants usually need to meet Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK (KOLL) requirement. This often includes two things: an approved English test and the Life in the UK Test.
Many applicants use IELTS Life Skills B1 for settlement and citizenship. This test checks only Listening and Speaking, so, you do not get an IELTS band score. Instead, the IELTS result for life skills is given as Pass or Fail.

What Does a 7 IELTS Score Mean for the UK?
An IELTS band 7 is a strong score for the UK. It is higher than the basic B2 visa requirement, which is usually IELTS 5.5 in each skill. It can also meet the English requirements for the best UK universities.
However, your overall score is not the only thing that matters. Some universities, visa routes and professional bodies ask for a minimum score in each skill. For example, if a course needs 7.0 in Writing, you will not qualify with 7.0 overall and 6.0 in Writing.
For UK nursing and midwifery registration, the NMC accepts IELTS Academic with at least 7.0 in Reading, Listening and Speaking, and at least 6.5 in Writing. So, always check both your overall score and your individual band scores before applying.
IELTS vs IELTS for UKVI: Which One Should You Take and When?
The IELTS Academic and IELTS for UKVI Academic tests the same four skills. The difference is that IELTS for UKVI is taken under additional security protocols required for UK visa and immigration purposes.

IELTS One Skill Retake for the UK
If your IELTS score is lower than the UK requirement in only one skill, you may consider IELTS One Skill Retake instead of repeating the full test. It allows you to retake only Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, depending on where you lost marks.
For UK visa use, make sure your retake is accepted for your route, and always confirm with your university, professional body or visa requirements before booking.
How to Hit Your Target IELTS Score for the UK
First, check the exact IELTS score required for your UK visa. Then compare it with the score required by your university, employer or professional body. Your target should be the higher requirement, not just the minimum visa score.
For example, your Student visa may need 5.5 in each skill, but your course may ask for 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each skill. In that case, you should prepare for the course requirement.
Then, use official IELTS practice materials first because they match the real test format. If your score is low in only one section, you can also check whether IELTS One Skill Retake is available and accepted before paying for a full retake.
Conclusion
The IELTS score for the UK is not the same for every applicant. It depends on why you are applying, such as for a visa, university admission, settlement, citizenship or professional registration.
For most new work visas (Skilled Worker, Health and Care, Scale-up, HPI), you need IELTS for UKVI 5.5 in each skill. For Student visas, the visa minimum is 5.5, but your university will likely require 6.5 to 7.5. For settlement and citizenship, IELTS Life Skills B1 is all you need, no band score, just a Pass.
One rule applies across all UK routes: always target the higher of your visa requirement vs your university or employer requirement. And always book the correct test type: IELTS Academic alone is not accepted for most UK visa applications.
