Scored 7.5 in three IELTS sections but only 6.0 in Writing? IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you retake just that one section for ₹12,650, instead of paying ₹19,000 to redo the entire exam.
Here's the best part: If your retake score drops, your original Test Report Form (TRF) stays valid. You choose which score to use. Zero risk.
In India, OSR is available for IELTS on Computer tests. You must book within 60 days of your original test date and can retake only one skill: Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking. Results come within 3-5 days, and you receive a new TRF showing your updated score for that section alongside your original scores for the other three.
This guide covers OSR eligibility, the fee breakdown, booking steps, which universities and countries accept OSR, and when a full retake might be the smarter choice.

- You haven't already used OSR for this test (one retake per full test)
Cost/Fee
- OSR fee in India: ₹12,650
- Full IELTS retake: ₹19,000
- Savings: ₹6,350
Acceptance
- Confirm your target university, visa authority, or professional body accepts OSR

Knowing these you will help you understand if IELTS OSR is right for you or not.

What OSR Is Not
Candidates often confuse One Skill Retake with two other options:
Enquiry on Results (EOR): EOR is a remarking request where you ask IELTS to recheck your existing test score. No new test. On the other hand, OSR is a fresh retake where you sit a new test section with new questions and receive a new score.
Full IELTS Retake: With OSR, you are not re-sitting Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking together. You only take one section again on test day.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Students book EOR thinking they'll get a retake. EOR costs ₹14,250 and only rejects or confirms your existing score, you don't take a new test. If you want to improve your score, book OSR, not EOR.

Which IELTS Skill Can You Retake?
You can retake any one of the four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. The IELTS exam pattern and timing remain the same as that skill in the full IELTS test.
If multiple skills are below your target, which should you retake?
- Easiest to improve quickly- Listening and Reading (practice-based, objective scoring)
- Hardest to improve quickly- Writing and Speaking (subjective scoring, need feedback)
-
Strategic choice- Retake the skill closest to your target score (e.g., if you scored 6.0 in Writing but need 6.5, that's easier to bridge than 5.5 to 6.5)

Do Universities and Visa Authorities Accept OSR?
Acceptance depends on the organisation. IELTS clearly recommends checking directly with the university, employer, professional body, or immigration authority before booking OSR.
United Kingdom
UK visas and immigration accepts IELTS One Skill Retake for Academic and General Training tests on a computer in selected locations. OSR is approved for SELT (Secure English Language Test) requirements for people applying to live, work, or study in the UK.
Australia and New Zealand
Both countries accept OSR for visa and migration purposes:
- Australia: Department of Home Affairs accepts OSR for student visas and skilled migration. AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) also accepts OSR for nursing and healthcare registration.
- New Zealand: Immigration New Zealand accepts OSR for visa applications.
Also Check: If you're planning to study in Australia, check IElTS score requirement in Australia to understand your next study abroad step.
Canada
For Canada, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) does NOT accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry applications. It is accepted for EMPP (Education and Managed Pathway Program) candidates only.
Regular study permit applicants should check current IRCC language requirements, as policies change frequently. The correct point is: SDS is no longer an active stream, and regular study permit applicants should check the current IRCC language-test requirements.
United States
Most U.S. universities accept IELTS for admissions, but OSR acceptance varies by institution. Check directly with your target university's admissions office, don't assume OSR is accepted just because they accept regular IELTS.
Universities Worldwide
OSR acceptance is not universal. Many universities accept it, but many don't or haven't updated their policies yet since OSR is relatively new (launched 2023).
Safe approach: If you can't find clear confirmation that OSR is accepted, assume it's NOT and plan for a full IELTS retake instead.

When IELTS One Skill Retake May Not Be the Right Choice
- Two or more skills are below target - You can only retake one skill, so OSR won't get you to your target score. Take the full IELTS instead.
- Your destination doesn't accept OSR - Verify acceptance before booking. Canada Express Entry does NOT accept OSR. If in doubt, full IELTS is safer.
- You scored 0.5 below AND believe it was marked incorrectly - Try EOR first (₹9,450). It's cheaper than OSR (₹12,650) and you get refunded if your score improves.
- You're 1.0+ bands below target in one skill - OSR might not bridge a full band gap. Spend time on IELTS preparation and take full exam again instead of gambling ₹12,650 on OSR.
The safe rule: If you're unsure whether OSR will work, take the full IELTS retake. Spending ₹19,000 once is better than spending ₹12,650 on OSR, failing to reach your target, then spending another ₹19,000 anyway (total: ₹31,650).
Conclusion
IELTS One Skill Retake gives test takers a more focused way to improve their results when just one section needs attention. It can save both money and effort compared to sitting the complete test again, but it should be used only after checking your score gap, deadline and acceptance requirements.
Before you book, make sure the retake supports your study, visa or professional goal. If your target organisation accepts OSR and only one skill needs improvement, it can be a smart next step. If not, a full IELTS exam retake may give you a cleaner and safer score report for your application.
