Australian Catholic University (ACU) is a publicly funded university that began in 1991, formed by bringing together four Catholic teacher-training and nursing colleges whose origins reach back to the mid-1800s. Although grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition, it is open to students and staff of all faiths and backgrounds. ACU has campuses in several cities across eastern Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Ballarat and Adelaide, as well as a campus in Rome. It teaches through faculties covering health sciences, education and arts, law and business, and theology and philosophy, with particular strength in health and education.
