IELTS Score for New Zealand

The IELTS score for New Zealand depends on the purpose of your application. Immigration NZ has fixed English language scores for some work and residence visas, but it does not set a common IELTS score for all student visa applicants. For student visas, the English requirement is usually decided by the university or education provider offering the course. Most students applying for university admission need IELTS Academic, while work and residence visa applicants may be allowed to use either IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training, depending on the visa category.

IELTS Requirement for New Zealand Work Visa, AEWV

For the Accredited Employer Work Visa, Immigration New Zealand requires English evidence if the job is at ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5. The required IELTS score is 4.0 overall. INZ accepts IELTS General Training or Academic, including IELTS One Skill Retake, but the test must be taken in person at a test centre and the result must be no more than 2 years old when you apply.

From 1 June 2026, the AEWV English requirement will also apply to ANZSCO and NOL skill level 3 occupations. This is important for applicants in mid-skilled roles because the requirement is expanding beyond level 4 and 5 jobs.

IELTS Score for New Zealand PR

For the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, the principal applicant must show IELTS 6.5 overall or more. A partner or dependent child aged 16 or older must show IELTS 5.0 overall or more, unless they meet the requirement through another accepted route or pay for English language lessons where allowed.

Your IELTS result must be taken in person at a test centre and must be no more than 2 years old at the time you apply. From 24 August 2026, English language test results will be valid for 5 years only for applicants who hold a recognised occupational registration. Do not apply the 5-year rule to every SMC applicant.

Also, higher IELTS scores do not give extra SMC points. Skilled Migrant points come from occupational registration, qualification, income, and skilled work experience in New Zealand.

Is a 5 Band IELTS Enough for New Zealand?

A 5.0 IELTS score can work for some New Zealand visa categories, but it is not enough for most direct university admissions or for the Skilled Migrant Category principal applicant.

IELTS 5.0 may work for a Skilled Migrant partner or dependent child aged 16 or older, the Parent Resident Visa overall-score route, and some business or dependent visa cases. However, most undergraduate courses usually require 6.0 overall, and postgraduate courses usually require 6.5 overall.

IELTS for Parent, Business and Investor Visas

For the Parent Resident Visa, the principal applicant and partner can meet the IELTS requirement with 5.0 overall, or 4.0 or more in at least 2 skills. If they do not meet the required score, they may be able to buy English language lessons instead.

For the Entrepreneur Resident Visa and the Employees of Relocating Business Resident Visa, INZ lists IELTS 4.0 overall for the principal applicant, partner, or dependent child. However, the Entrepreneur Work Visa is now closed to new applications, so avoid presenting it as a fresh route for new applicants.

For the Business Investor Work Visa, the required IELTS score is 5.0 overall for the principal applicant. For the Business Investor Resident Visa, the principal applicant does not need to meet the English requirement again because it was already checked at the work visa stage, but the partner and dependent children aged 16 or older need IELTS 5.0 overall or an accepted alternative.

For the Active Investor Plus Visa, the English requirement was removed under the new settings that started on 1 April 2025.

Conclusion

The IELTS score for New Zealand is not the same for every applicant. Students should check the English requirement on their university or course page, while work, PR, parent, and business visa applicants should follow the exact Immigration New Zealand visa rule. Before booking IELTS, confirm whether you need Academic or General Training, check the minimum score, and make sure your result will still be valid when you apply.
