PTE Academic Updates 2025: Two New Speaking Tasks You Must Know

From Aug 7 2025, PTE Academic adds two new speaking tasks - Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. Raising total items to 22 and test time to 2 h 15 m. See changes, scoring tweaks and prep tips to stay ahead.

As per the latest official announcement made by Pearsons, the PTE exam new updates include two additional question types starting from August 7, 2025. 1. Summarize Group Discussion: This task requires you to recap main ideas from a short group discussion audio, testing both listening and speaking capabilities.

Task: You will listen to an audio of a short group discussion ( 3 people usually) for 3 minutes. Once the audio finishes you can prepare for 10 seconds and then give your answer for 2 minutes. You must record your response orally after the microphone opens after  the beep.

Skills assessed: Listening and speaking

Prompt Length: 3 Minutes

Response time: 2 Minutes

2. Respond to a Situation: You’ll listen to and read a real-life scenario and provide an appropriate spoken response thus assessing practical speaking skills.

Task: On the screen you will read and also listen to a prompt of a real life scenario of a situation. Once you hear a beep, record your response to that situation in 40 seconds.

Skills Assessed: Speaking

Prompt length: A test up to 60 words

Additional new PTE Test Enhancement

AI and Human scoring Mix - Seven tasks (including the two new ones) are now monitored with more human oversight to limit repetitive or templated response thus looking for genuine, content-rich replies. This will ensure fair scores and better assessment of student’s communication skills.

Test Duration and Structure Modifications

  • The test will now take approximately 15 minutes longer than before, accounting for the new question types

  • Traditional modules and sections remain unchanged; only the overall timing has been extended

  • The old format takes 2 hours approximately for completion, and the new addition will extend it to 2 hours and 15 minutes

Scoring and Evaluation Updates

However, there are no major changes made in the PTE exam scoring and evaluation past of the test. The scoring scale remains intact on a scale of 0- 90 and the results will be declared in 2-5 business days. The evaluation method is a combination of AI and human intervention as before.

Changes in Booking and Scheduling

PTE has not made any changes related to PTE exam booking or scheduling processes. Institutional acceptance remains stable, with no changes reported. The  test results will continue to be valid for all current purposes.
